This month we are celebrating the core of recreation: PLAY!

Play is exuberating and replenishing. Just think about how great you feel when you participate in something you really enjoy. That’s what play is all about. It’s about having fun.

Play is often described as a time when we feel most alive, yet we often take it for granted and may completely forget about it. But play isn't a luxury - it's a necessity. Play is as important to our physical and mental health as getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising.

Despite the power of play, somewhere between childhood and adulthood, many of us stop playing. We exchange play for work and responsibilities. By giving ourselves permission to play with the joyful abandon of childhood, we can continue to reap its benefits throughout life.

How can you encourage play or add more to your life?  Here are a few tips:
  • Participate in recreation programs offered in your community!
  • Get involved with your Community Council, make play space a priority and see how you can make a difference!
  • Explore local trails, parks and neighboring communities!
  • Try new activities; take up a round of golf for the first time!
  • Role model for family and friends and invite them to join you!
  • Leave the car at home, walk, run, bike or rollerblade!
  • Be a kid again, invest in the toys you loved as a child and turn them into adult activities, like ultimate Frisbee.
  • Exchange 3 of your more sedentary habits for more active types of leisure.
  • Add activity breaks to meetings, or instead of  gathering around a table go for a walk.
  • Need more ideas, contact your local PSP Community Recreation Department.
