Project Fund Selects Innovative and Enhanced Programming

Director Military Family Services (DMFS) is pleased to announce that it has selected the successful applicants for the 2008/2009 Military Family Services Program (MFSP) Project Fund in support of original Canadian/Military Family Resource Centre (C/MFRC) projects.

“We were very excited by the submissions we received and very impressed,” said Linda Tyrrell, DMFS Policy Development and Research Manager. “The MFSP Project Fund is a great way for us to communicate with the field and help fund projects that our C/MFRCs identify as priorities for families.”

This year, MFSP Project Fund will support the development of three family deployment support projects.

- Petawawa MFRC will receive support to create a Children’s Deployment Support Program kit and enhanced supplemental resources.

- Kingston MFRC will develop a Standardized National Deployment Toolkit which will include web based resources for families and C/MFRC leader briefing guides.

- Esquimalt’s initiative, an MFRC Deployment Video Project, has also been approved and will complement Kingston’s project. Esquimalt and Kingston will form a partnership to ensure that innovative deployment resources are available for families in multiple mediums.

The MFSP Project Fund was introduced in 2006 to acknowledge the skills and expertise of MFRC staff by supporting their ideas with funding to develop special projects. Proposals are selected based on their projected ability to create outstanding, innovative MFSP resources and programming for CF.

Over the past two years, the fund has supported the development of some excellent local projects, each with the potential for expansion. St. John’s MFRC has developed a statistical database which is now being used by additional centres. An employment support database created by the Shilo MFRC has also had much local success and is now gaining support in other locations. Esquimalt MFRC’s last project, www.familynavigator.ca, is an informative website for CF families with members with special needs.

“Each of these projects has proven to be a great local resource with national implications,” said Dean McCuaig, DMFS Policy Development and Research Manager.

DMFS thanks all of the MFRCs who submitted proposals this year and congratulates the selected MFSP Project Fund applicants. Formal acknowledgements of the chosen applications have been forwarded to each successful MFRC. DMFS wishes you continued success with the development of your projects and looks forward to hearing more about the initiatives as they progress.
