Shilo Military Family Resource Centre partners with Brandon University
By Christine Helgason, Shilo MFRC
When the School of Health Studies at Brandon University put out a call for practicum placements for students in the Psychiatric Nursing Program, the Shilo Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) answered.
We are pleased to have two students, Christina and Amanda, collaborate with us on the first phase of our community development project.
As in many communities, we feel we could be doing a better job of reaching specific populations – in our case, youth aged 13 to 17. We want to make sure we are doing everything possible to meet the needs of youth in military families through programming and services available at the MFRC.
How do we go about doing that? That’s where the Community Development Project comes in.
• For phase one of the project, we will work with our student partners to develop a needs assessment tool to gather information about the needs of youth in military families.
• Phase two is the actual administration of the needs assessment.
• Development of a program, service or event to meet the needs identified is the goal of phase three.
• Phase four involves offering the program, service or event.
• For phase five of the project, we will evaluate the success of the program, service or event in meeting the needs of youth.
Throughout the project, we will consult with and report to local stakeholders to ensure a community approach. The Brandon University students will be supervised by preceptors at the MFRC and their instructional associate at the university. Ethical considerations and confidentiality are of critical importance to this project, and will be monitored closely.
Project updates will be available at www.shilomfrc.ca and in our free community newsletter. We also plan to publish updates in the Shilo Stag, and the Westman Journal, our local newspaper.
The Shilo MFRC welcomes Christina and Amanda to the centre, and looks forward to working together to meet the needs of youth in our community.
