Helping military families care for elderly loved ones

by Emily Hatcher, Halifax & Region MFRC Resource Development

Families exist in many different shapes and sizes, all of which bring their own unique challenges. For some military families, the challenge may be caring for an elderly family member on a part-time or full-time basis. To help these families, the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) is working in partnership with the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) to offer a program that helps to ease the responsibility of elder care.

Every Friday morning from 9:30am to 12:30pm at the Shearwater Site of the MFRC, VON hosts Breakaway, a program for elderly individuals who are unable to care for themselves alone during the day. This program provides military family caregivers with the opportunity to have a break, while knowing that their loved one is being well cared for.

“The MFRC is very fortunate to be able to offer programming for seniors within the CF family. Not only does this program give caregivers a break from the daily care routine, but it also allows the participants to enjoy a break from their caregiver in a comfortable and safe environment that encourages independence,” says Colleen Calvert, Executive Director of the MFRC.

The program consists of gentle exercise for the body and mind, as well as therapeutic activities including music, stretch, relaxation, games, cooking and field trips.

One participant of Breakaway explains, “Breakaway is a great anchor for me. You tend to drift a lot at my age and your mind wanders. When you get together with these people it rebuilds your confidence and concentration. I have a lot in common with the other group members; I appreciate where they are coming from and they understand me. It’s a very comforting program.”

One very special element of the program is a visit from children age four to five who attend the Shearwater Children’s Centre daycare program. On the last Friday of each month, the children join the program for one hour and take part in an activity where the participants may read, decorate cookies or play an instrument with the children.

Breakaway is a great opportunity to offer respite support for caregivers, while providing elderly loved ones with a safe and constructive environment. Please contact 902-720-1885 for more information.
