Edmonton MFRC rings in holidays with Gift Wrap Fundraiser
by Barry Turner, Edmonton MFRC Fund Development Coordinator
The Edmonton Military Family Resource Centre’s (MFRC) 8th Annual Londonderry Mall Gift Wrap Fundraiser was an outstanding event thanks to the exceptional contributions of our volunteers. From 20 November to 24 December, over 300 shifts at the Gift Wrap Centre were operated by MFRC Board Members, staff, and a huge group of supportive volunteers.
The event garnered over 1000 hours of volunteer participation and over $10 000 in support for MFRC programs and services. Volunteers included the Oil City Derby Girls, who supplied a number of highly skilled wrappers (sans roller-skates) in support of the event. The Alberta Paramedic Services also participated, fully staffing four days of gift wrap shifts themselves. The Edmonton Oil Kings even made an appearance with a number of all-star wrappers!
Edmonton Garrison Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Tom Bradley and his staff also took part in the event by donating their wrapping services. Tamara Greenwood, Regional Marketing Director for Londonderry Mall, oversaw the donation of a huge retail store location within Londonderry Mall, as well as the wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and supplies needed to make the event work. Bob Mann, Deputy Director with the Edmonton MFRC, attributed the community’s ongoing support to the continuing success of the annual fundraiser.
“The assistance of Londonderry Mall and Ms. Greenwood is what continues to make this annual event possible. Again this year, the support for the event was above and beyond,” said Bob. “Having such a supportive community has a profound effect on military families beyond the Christmas season, lasting all year long.”
