8th Annual Edmonton Yellow Ribbon Gala raises over $65 000
by Jennifer Shuman, Edmonton MFRC Marketing and Communications Coordinator
On 15 May 2010, Presenting Sponsors Dianne and Irving Kipnes welcomed over 220 guests to the Edmonton Garrison Officers’ Mess for the 8th Annual Yellow Ribbon Gala. The event raised a record $65,000 in support of the Edmonton Garrison Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC).

The black tie evening was a huge success, starting with a reception hosted by the Edmonton Salutes Committee. Appetizers and cocktails were served while guests perused the many silent auction items donated by the local business community.
The evening was emceed by Stacey Brotzel of Citytv Edmonton, who entertained guests as they enjoyed an amazing four course meal and bid on unique live auction items such as a handcrafted diamond ring donated by Gemport Jewellers. Guests were also treated to an exhilarating performance by the Loyal Edmonton Regiment Black Light Drum Line.
Guest speaker Brigadier-General Jonathan Vance captivated all in attendance with his insight on combat operations in Afghanistan. He validated Canada’s pride in our soldiers, reaffirmed the importance of the mission and highlighted Canada’s achievements. From his personal experiences with the MFRC, General Vance also discussed the important role the MFRC plays in supporting military families while soldiers are deployed.
Military families face many unique challenges. The operational tempo at the Edmonton Garrison is currently one of the highest in the country, and this has created an increased demand for the programs and services provided by the MFRC.
The $65,000 raised through the Yellow Ribbon Gala will be used to supplement the funds provided by the Department of National Defence to provide services to military families in the following program delivery areas:
• Children’s Services,
• Prevention, Support and Intervention,
• Deployment Support, and
• Personal Development and Community Integration.
The record breaking success of this year’s Gala was possible because of the philanthropic community in Edmonton. Members of the business, civilian and military communities provided unwavering support through volunteerism, ticket sales, sponsorships, and both live and silent auction item donations. Thank you for believing in the strength behind the uniform, our military families!
