Project Update: Environmental Scan of Canadian Forces Families

Throughout the summer of 2009, Director Military Family Services (DMFS) completed an environmental scan to determine the mechanisms used by Canadian/Military Family Resource Centres (C/MFRCs) to collect the personal contact information of local Canadian Forces (CF) personnel and their families. The data has now been analyzed, and it is evident that the way this information is collected, stored and distributed needs to be standardized across C/MFRC locations.

In the environmental scan, over 30% of C/MFRCs reported that they are not receiving the personal contact information of CF personnel living in their communities from their Commanding Officer. To this end, a letter from Chief Military Personnel Major-General Semianiw has been sent to all Commanding Officers to remind them of their obligation to forward this information to C/MFRCs promptly and efficiently.

Concurrently, DMFS is working on a process to provide the personal contact information of local CF personnel directly to each C/MFRC. As part of this project, C/MFRCs have recently been asked to validate which postal codes fall under their area of responsibility. The postal code data will then be used to determine the CF personnel residing in each area.

DMFS expects to have more information available for C/MFRCs in early 2010, and is committed to keeping C/MFRCs informed as this project unfolds.
