Ask an Ado

As reported by youth correspondent Tyra Ball from Comox

Editor's note: Ever wondered about teen culture? What do those words mean? Why do they dress the way they do?

What's cool and what's not? Is using the word cool still cool? If you have specific questions, this is the time and place to ask.

Please drop me an email at apropos@cfpsa.com and I'll forward it to the youth from www.connectingcfyouth.ca who will be happy to tell us what's what.

What's with the clothes you guys wear these days anyway?

I was waiting for this to come up - it's all about the clothes! First of all, I'm going to point out that I've seen the pictures of what you all wore at our ages. Our style keeps copying yours and imitation is definitely the sincerest form of flattery. I happen to love my crocheted top and flares.

Now, as for the twists we may add - one is just because the clothing is not accommodating real people anymore. Pant waistbands have been lowered so belts don't sit right and you get the inevitable undergarment flash when sitting. I'm a tall girl too so it's either a case of shirts being too long or too short for me. Even I don't understand why girls want their guts hanging out, or a shirt you can barely wear as a dress! I'm beginning to believe that fashion designers have no clue what teens actually look like anymore. We need clothes that more than two body types can wear again!

I realise a lot of the designers are going for sex appeal in their clothing, which would be fine for us older youth, however, I really don't understand the need for younger youth to be wearing things like this at school. I find clothes shopping the most tedious chore in the world nowadays because you can't find suitable teen work clothes. Yep, that's right, I'll say it! I HATE CLOTHES SHOPPING!

So my answer for you today? I have no clue what's up with our fashion. Even I don't understand it and I'm a graduate of the era. Give me the '60s hippie style any day.

Decipher some of the MSN terms/acronyms you use....

The basics? You must know:

Lol -"Laughing out loud" - Used in conversations for when you can't think of anything better to say to a remark that makes you even smirk a bit. Also used to convey sarcasm for a comment you don't want people to get offended by.

Brb - "Be right back" - This is the "I'm leaving for a minute, but don't log off!" term. For example: "Washing the dishes, brb!"

A/S/L - "Age/Sex/Location?" The pass or fail test when meeting people in chats or messenger. If you aren't the right age, sex, or in the right location, people will not bother to finish a conversation with you. This is usually found in conversations when people are looking for boyfriends or girlfriends online.

That should get you through a normal conversation. I promise it's not a foreign language and we don't use anywhere near the lists you can find on the net of acronyms. If you're ever stumped, I recommend www.noslang.com www.noslang.com for help.
