Diversity and Employment Equity
On March 3rd 2009, the Canadian Forces Leadership Institute hosted the 6th annual Women Leading in Defence symposium. The objective of the symposium was to provide information relevant to women and the leadership of mixed gender teams in the Defence. Although the symposium was directed toward members of the CF and DND employees, NPF was invited to present the wonderful contributions that NPF women have made in supporting those who serve.
The theme of this year's symposium was "Challenge the Past – Embrace the Future," thus providing a forum to explore challenges, opportunities and progress made in the past. I was saddened to hear certain struggles that women had to go through in their careers, but mostly inspired by their courage, determination and perseverance. Although some work still remains to be done, many improvements have been made since then. The younger generation of women truly and heartily appreciates all the hard work that has been done in regards to women’s rights and hardly sees obstacles or barriers in today’s workplace.
Leadership was an important focus of the symposium and Joan Legris, NPF Regional Human Resources Manager, presented some of NPF women leaders and their contributions throughout the years. She was also invited to share on her personal experiences and provided inspiring advice to all women and men to speak up, to not be afraid to ask and to work hard for what you want.
