MFF Annual Report FY 2009/2010

FY 2009/2010 was a busy but rewarding year for the Military Families Fund with one hundred and fifty-four families receiving assistance.  Some of the types of cases in which we provided assistance included:  basic needs for retired members seeking help for psychological issues; travel expenses for a spouse to accompany a member to the hospital; partial financial coverage for a modified van for a family whose child had suffered severe brain injuries; home modifications for injured members and transportation costs of family members to attend a repatriation ceremony. A significant amount of work was done in raising awareness of the Fund within the military community.  Presentations were provided to all levels of Base/Wing Staff across Canada.  As well, meetings with key stakeholders were held at about half of the Bases/Wings.  A review of the third party fundraising process was also conducted and a formal screening process was developed and implemented.

Financial Overview

This year, the fund received $990K in donations.  A total of $358K was dispersed to assist military families.  Figure 1 shows a breakdown by percentage of the disbursements.

The category “Misc” includes:  repairs, facility rental, basic living expenses and clothing.  Costs for administrative overhead are not reflected in Figure 2.  Overhead expenses totaled 13.6K and included costs associated with the 1-800 telephone line, BMO Prepaid Card Administration Fees, Chase Fees and Honorariums.

Third Party Fundraisers/Initiatives

The MFF was fortunate to receive many of its donations this year through third party fundraisers.  Some of the events held this year included:  an annual SOT Motorcycle Ride in New Norway; a 2010 Circuit for the Cause event run by members of 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group; a Buy Nothing New Sale event run by students of Our Lady of the Angels School in Fort Saskatchewan; a True Patriot Love Foundation Gala and a Home Coming Event at La Maison D’Or.

We would like to extend a special thank you to all the third party fundraisers that were held this past year and raised funds for the MFF.  It is only through the generosity of our donors that we are able to continue helping our military families.
