Soldier On Fund Annual Report 2009/2010

FY 2009/2010 marked the second anniversary for the Fund.  The Fund was created to provide proactive support to seriously injured or ill CF personnel with a focus on enabling them to pursue physical activity, recreation and sport.
Since its inception, the Fund has provided assistance to more than 54 members and has assisted in the areas of adaptive sports equipment, active for life, high performance and Soldier On Events.  The following are just a few of the examples of the types of expenses in each of the respective areas.  For example, for adaptive sports equipment, the Fund covered the cost of a custom hand crank cycle and a home gym.  In terms of high performance, the fund covered the cost of travel for a member to attend National Sitting Volleyball Camps and reimbursed travel expenses for members to attend a World Triathlon Competition.  With respect to Soldier On Events, the Fund allowed some members to participate in the Army Run and most recently covered the cost of family members to attend the Paralympics with the injured CF member.
Financial Overview
In the last two years, the fund has received a total of $551K in donations of which $449K was received this past year.  In total, $70K was disbursed.  Figure 1 shows a breakdown by percentage of the disbursements.

Third Party Events

Soldier On Fund, like the Military Families Fund and the Hospital Comforts Fund is dependent on the generosity of donations and fundraising efforts by the general public.  This past year, the fund benefited from third party events such as: the Army Run; the K2K Spin-a-thon and the Lanny MacDonald Roast with the Calgary Flames Foundation just to name a few.  Soldier On gains its support mostly through grass roots rank and file initiatives. Education and awareness are first and foremost in understanding persons with disabilities. Providing environments that empower those with physical and psychological challenges fosters change and understanding. A special thank you to all who have supported Soldier On over the last few years.
